What is some basic advice so that a traveller would not get sick from Salmonella overseas?

These rules apply for all food borne pathogens (bacteria and viruses) when traveling abroad.

(1) only eat fruit and vegetables that you can peal - e.g. bananas, oranges etc. Only exception is melon which you should stay away from

(2) only drink bottled water - make sure the seal is not broken before drinking

(3) don't wash teeth with tap water

(4) Make sure all meats are thoroughly cooked before eating them. Avoid uncooked chicken meat, eggs and seafood.

(5) don't buy food from a street vendor who looks ill

(6) only eat in restaurants that have a lot of customers particularly locals as this is a good sign that the food is healthy

Enjoy !

William has good advise. Hygine is important. Do not wash or rinse mouth with tap or any source of water (particularly if travelling in third world countries) other than bottled water. Drink soda water(carbonated) if sealed bottled water not available. No to any salads, cold deserts, ice creams, etc. (any pre-made or pre-cooked items). In restaurents order only meals that they have to cook fresh for you and serve steamy hot. Lots of customers in a restaurent means they have to constantly cook foods all the time.

Bon voyage

Adding to William D's excellent answer, always wash and dry your hands well before eating, if this is not possible, carry handwipes with you. It's easy to forget to do this, say at a Mall, but believe me, that's where the little germy blighters lurk.

Enjoy your trip.
