I am buying a playstation 3 - advice please?

I have alot of ps2 games i want to play, aswell as new ps3 games, when friends come round but which do I have to buy as only one model can play old ps2 games?

Also what TV do I have to play it as there is something to do with quality of hi-def on some TVs? I am buying a playstation 3 - advice please?
Right now PS2-compatible PS3s aren't in production anymore. You can buy second hand or refurbished one, but it's like a lottery. New PS3 versions (40GB, new 80GB and upcoming 160GB) don't play PS2 games due to some hardware issues.

PS3 will look great on SDTV, but in order to see true picture - 1080p (or 720p) HDTV is the best (PS3 must be plugged with HDMI cable - sold separately, ~5$)I am buying a playstation 3 - advice please?
If you are planning on buying a PS3 game console, it can play ps3 games as well as ps2 games.

you have not provided enough details as to the specifics, of your problem and answer of need.

if you are gonna buy a PS3, which plays blu ray movie discs, and blu ray games. then you need a HD t.v either a 720p or 1080p

the graphics of PS3 are pretty amazing, if you are playing PS3 on an ordinary t.v then like having a ferrari and never going above the 2nd gear. the graphics are brilliant, and awesome, and to witness that, you need an hd tv with an hdmi input. not to mention a surrond system, 4.1 or 5.1 home theatre won't hurt...
Not all PS3s can play PS2.

Look for the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle, that was the last model produced that could play PS2, and there may still be some on store shelves.

Wikipedia actually does a good job of categorizing each model:
