I'm so sad. I can't believe I'm crying over this but I'm really depressed that I can't find work (it would only be a part time job but still). It's all I think about. It's my second year of college now and I'm afraid I'll never get a job.
I can't imagine how the people who really NEED jobs feel when they can't find work.
Wish me luck if nothing else. Thank you.Really depressed about not being able to find a job. Any advice or kind words?
Totally know how you feel. I've been looking for about 7 months now. In short, those guy's in DC weren't kidding when they said a recession was going on.
Seriously, don't feel too bad. Open jobs really are being eaten up very fast nowadays. It's not just you. It pretty much is about being in the right place at the right time. I just got a job at Whole Foods and I start next week. It took me applying there for 3 positions and tons of phone calls, but after months I finally got it. Here's what to do.
Don't leave it to chance. You won;t get hired if you just drop off an app, especially if it's online. After you fill it out, go to the place during non-busy hours and ask for the hiring manager. Introduce yourself and be honest ';I just wanted to put a face with my applicationa dn let you know that I'm very interested in working for this company';. Tey'll appreciate the initiative. If you haven't heard back from them in a week, call back and speak to THE SAME PERSON. Reintroduce yourself ';Hi I spoke with you about a week ago and I was just wondering if the positon was still available';. Eventually you'll get the vibe that they don't want you or they'll set up an interview with you.
Also, it REALLY helps when you have an employee reference. Ask your buddies that have jobs if they'd mind if you worked there. Then do what I mentioned above and include ';I know Melissa Brown and she spoke highly of this company. It got me interested in working here, so I thought to apply'; Most of the time employers are very generous when they like the employee. I went to High School with a girl at Whole Foods. She saw me and told me to call and speak to an Ashley. I did, I told her I knew the girl and she booked me for an interview the next day! They key is to make yourself more PERSONAL to the hiring manager. You have to be a face not just a name on an application. Good Luck!!!!!
PS_It also helps when you apply places were you fit the stereotype. If you're dorkier, apply at Blockbuster. If you're a new age hippie apply at Whole Foods. If you're super-cool, apply at an Abercrombie %26amp; Fitch. If you're nuturing and intellectual, apply at a Kumon Tutoring center. Employers stereotype. They actually teach them this in school. They know their product and want to hire people who LOOK like they use it! Figure out were you fit in!Really depressed about not being able to find a job. Any advice or kind words?
Don't worry about it. That's why your in college to get the upper hand and that's the most important thing. Its great that your furthering your education.
I looked for months this spring for a summer job and didn't find a single one. I've done internships, I'm overqualified for hostess, serving, barista, cashier positions and I didn't get a single one at all, all summer. Then school started back up and I threw myself into that.
Don't worry about it. The economy is in the toilet right now and as college students were competing with people twice our age with families for the same positions we once dominated.
You'll find something. Maybe a better opportunity is waiting for you and its just going to take a little while and in the long run you'll be glad you didn't get something and quit looking.
Focus on school and you WILL get a job. he economy is bouncing back and you're already ahead of the game by being in school.
Good luck and cheer up!
Jobs are hard to find anymore. In most cased it's not what you know, but who you know. If you don't know anybody, then make yourself marketable. Know your worth as a worker and make the employers feel like if they turn you away, then they are missing out on a good opportunity. Of course don't pretend to be something your not, but sell yourself and see what happens.
A LOT of people are struggling to find work. It's nothing wrong with you.
Have you applied for different jobs in your college? Working in the cafeteria, maintenance, etc? Keep applying, but don't worry about it. There's only so much you can do.
I graduated college back in March of '07, I finally found a job in October of '08, and it lasted all of three weeks. I am still looking, I really need a job, but I'm about to give up in frustration.
Stick with it, you will find something. It does take time, believe me, I have been there many times, and I am one of those people that HAS TO WORK..... but I have always found something. Just give it time.
Here's the thing - not being able to find a job right now, especially in this horrible economic situation, isn't because you aren't good enough to have one or because you are lacking in some way. It's because millions of people are applying to anything and everything they can find, no matter really what it is, so you are facing competition for everything. I know of many employers who have posted job listings online and gotten such a slew of responses that they don't even know where to begin in sorting out the applicants.
If your current strategy hasn't worked, try to change tactics. Write a list of all your skills down, no matter how ridiculous they seem or if they seem like something you could do for work or not. Try exploring some different avenues - do you have something you could do that isn't expensive to start up as your own company so you could make a little side cash? Is there a skill in there that a charity or nonprofit organization could find you useful for, even if you don't get paid right now? Try volunteering somewhere as a way to make yourself feel useful and to get around people who may recommend you for something - I've found two of my best paying and longest lasting jobs by starting as a volunteer in my area. If you are having trouble getting your foot in the door by applying for stuff online, do some literal walking through doors - give your resume to anyone you wouldn't mind working for! Look nice, show up, give them your resume, and make a good impression - many of them will keep your resume around ';just in case'; something opens up. :)
You will find work, and you can do it! Good luck. :)
