I'm going to San Francisco State next fall and the closer it gets to leaving home, the more nervous I get. I know I can make friends, and survive and what not... its just I feel like I'm just going to be so unprepared or something. Just if anyone could give me so good advice about living on your own I would really appreciate it!!What is some good advice for someone who is starting college and living on their own for the first time?
Remember to balance your social and your academic life. Way too many students flunk out after the first year because they were too busy partying and getting drunk to remember to attend class and study.
Attend your classes and pay attention and you are almost guaranteed to pass the subject. If you add studying to that then your marks will be quite high.
If you need help then don't be scared to ask. Universities and places like universities have plenty of support systems for students and if you need it then use it. Don't be embarrassed, just remember that the people at the support centre have been there for a while and have heard it all.
Be careful of what you eat. It's very tempting when you're on your own for the first time to over do the junk food but this just leads to you gaining a lot of weight. Eat healthy, snack healthy and remember to exercise (this will help in the studies too)
Lecturers and generally all tertiary teachers will not spoon-feed you information. You're expected to do a lot of pre-reading and researching and you can't expect the teachers to do this for you. On the other hand, if you don't understand something then go to the teacher and/ or the tutors with your problem (try to be specific with what it is that you don't understand, makes it easier to help you).
Lastly, relax and have some fun. Soon you're going to love living on your own so much that staying with your parents gets to be annoying :D
Good luck with the future!
